Hemkunt Parbat hai jahaan ||
Sapt sring sobhit hai tahaan ||
In every summer thousands of devotees from all over the world visit to Gurudwara Sri Hemkunt Sahib( ਹੇਮਕੁੰਟ ਸਾਹਿਬ ). As alluded to, in the holy Granth Sahib, Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Guru of the Sikh faith meditated on the bank of this lake( Hemkunt Lake ). The lake, fed by springs and waterfalls, is cold. Until mid June, all but a narrow margin of water along the shore is covered by ice.
The take-off point for Hemkunt Sahib is the town of Govindghat about 268 K.m. from Rishikesh. Gurudwara Hemkunt Sahib situated 17.5 K.m.from Govindghat, Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, India. The 11.5 K.m. Trek ( Gurudwara Govindghat to Gurudwara GobindDham) is along a reasonably well maintained path to the village of Ghangaria(also called Govinddham ). This path can be covered either by walk or by pony. Gurudwara Sahib here gives shelter to pilgrims. In addition there are a few hotels and a camp ground with tents and mattresses. A climb on a 6 K.m. of stone paved path leads to Gurudwara Hemkunt Sahib. Two congregational services are held daily at Gurudwara Sri Hemkunt Sahib, the first at ten o'clock and the second at one o'clock. Both centre around the Ardas( the Sikh standard prayer )and the reading of the daily hukamnama( the verse at the top of the left hand page of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib when the book is opened at random; understood to be the command of the Guru for the day ). Overnight stay is not allowed at Hemkunt Sahib and so it is necessary to leave by 2 PM to make it back to Govindghat or GovindDham by night.

History of Sri Hemkunt Sahib -  This holy place, known as Hemkunt Sahib , is the Tap Asthan( place of meditation and prayer )at which the tenth and final living Guru of the Sikhs achieved union with God in his previous incarnation. From there, the Guru was summoned by God to be reborn into the world to teach the people the true path. The temple built on the shore of the lake commemorates his mission. It also shelters the Sri Guru Granth Sahib , the eternal scriptural Guru for the Sikh community. The community is itself recognized as a collective Guru, and pilgrims, as they walk the path toward Hemkunt, share the sacred journey with its members.
In this way, all three forms of the Guru - the source of spiritual guidance - are understood to be present at Hemkunt Sahib . Sikh pilgrims go there to be inspired to walk the same difficult path that the Guru walked, both in body and in spirit, and to, through the Guru's grace, realize their connection with God in the same place where the Guru realized his. At Hemkunt Sahib , Sikhs feel closer to the Guru and, through the Guru, closer to God. Gurudwara Hemkunt Sahib in the Himalayas is also regarded as one of the holiest places of the Sikhs. It was there that Sri Guru Gobind Singh the tenth and last Guru of the Sikhs is reported to have meditated in his previous life.

In ' Bachitar Natak ' the great Guru relates his story which is interpreted as - " I shall now relate my own story, how God sent me into this world. I was busy performing penance on the hills of 'Hemkunt' where seven peaks are prominent. The place is called 'Sapt Shring’ where King Pandu had performed Yoga, there I practised austerity and worshipped the god of death."
